What is shockwave therapy?
A non-invasive approach, shockwave therapy uses high-intensity sound waves to interact with the tissues in your body.
To administer the treatment, your practitioner uses a handheld wand over your injury or pain area. The sound-waves stimulate a number of positive responses, including neovascularisation ingrowth, reversal of chronic inflammation, stimulation of collagen, and dissolution of calcium build-up. Stimulation of these biological mechanisms promotes an ideal healing environment as the injured area returns to normal, and pain subsides.
Shockwave therapy is usually administered over a number of short sessions, usually taking no more than 15 minutes each. Whilst some people report mild, temporary discomfort, the first signs of pain relief usually occur after just 24 hours.
How can shockwave therapy help me?
Shockwave therapy works especially well when incorporated into a broader treatment plan. It assists in the treatment of a number of chronic muscular and tendon disorders, as well as back and cervical pain.
Shockwave therapy is commonly used to treat:
- Lower back and shoulder pain
- Tennis elbow
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Patellar tendonitis
- Groin and hip pain
